I love all of these things, Dave. But I think some of your 2 needs to go into group 3. Try and limit your self to three or four main pillars for group two.

Great article, thank you for these thoughts.

My pyramid:

1. Emotional, often melancholic music, mostly without lyrics

2. Getting in touch with your feelings, desires, the stuff below the surface of consciousness

3. Mostly improvised music, often recorded live in one take. Made with a setup of “Frippertronics” loopers

This has been such an interesting read. While I don't make music myself, I still think this is such useful advice as I figure out my brand for my (eventual) radio show/podcast.

This has clicked into place some of the ideas I've heard others try to explain, but none as clearly and as concisely as yourself.
